How we care for our skin gives us healthy looking skin

Healthy looking skin

Healthy looking skin is  different. Healthy looking skin is a standard set by the beauty industry and advertisers. It keeps a lot of people in employment because it’s what drives us to keep up with skincare routines. Healthy looking skin is what we’re all bombarded with when we look at magazines and watch beauty adverts. Its youthful, soft, radiant and smooth skin. It’s the skin that we all may have had unknowingly in our teens and 20’s. It’s likely to be an unachievable and misleading claim if you’re slightly past a certain age. However the majority of products claim to give us skin that is more youthful, firmer and “anti ageing”. Anti ageing is not possible unless you are a time traveller. Every time you see this on the front of a product then I suggest swerve it. Remember aged skin is normal skin. Aged skin is still healthy skin.

Most of us are able to achieve healthy looking skin by following a skin care routine. We’ve devised the Cosmedics Skin Care Routine. An easy routine which can help you achieve the best from your skin using the smallest number of products. We think of it as the path of least resistance. You can use as little as 4 products in your routine. A cleanser, toner, day moisturiser and night moisturiser. (Although we like to add an additional cleanser for our double cleanse in the evening).

When you cleanse you remove dirt, shedding skin cells and oils from the surface of the skin. This additional debris makes your skin look uneven. When light hits a surface that is uneven less of it is reflected. It’s the reflected light that gives you that “glowing”, “radiant”, “brighter looking” skin that we associate with youthful skin. Additionally moisturising helps to fill the layers between the shedding skin layers making skin look “bouncy”, “firmer” and more “elastic”. Moisturiser is mainly water ( it can be over 90% water). It also contains oils. These both prevent skin from appearing dry by hydrating and lubricating the skin.

So when we say use any moisturiser, we do mean any moisturiser will work. However everybody is quite individual with how oily or dry their skin is. So you may find that a moisturiser that is good for you may make someone else’s skin a little more oily.

Read our section on what ingredients we look for in a good moisturiser. From hydrating ingredients to oils there are a few handy tips to get you finding that perfect moisturiser.
